How do I apply for research ethics approval?

All research undertaken at NMIT, whether by staff or students, must be considered for ethics approval before the research begins.

Depending on the type of research, your project may require ethics approval, consultation, or may be exempt (for example, research that uses existing publicly available data).

Before starting your project, discuss your research with your programme coordinator or research supervisor to determine whether ethics approval is required.

When planning your research, you must consider how you will:

• Protect the safety and well-being of human and animal participants.
• Consider the potential impacts of your research and any published findings.
• Ensure your research does not have adverse ethical impacts on communities or groups.
• Conduct your research in accordance with NMIT's Te Tiriti o Waitangi Policy.

If your research:

• Involves animals, or
• Has an impact on Māori,

To apply for research ethics approval:

1. Complete the Research Ethics Application – Student Template.
2. If your research involves participants, include:
   • A Participant Information Sheet, and
   • A Consent Form.
3. Use the appropriate Participant Information Sheet template:
   • Qualitative research (for interviews and similar methods), or
   • Quantitative research (for surveys and online questionnaires).
4. Submit your completed application and supporting documents to your research supervisor and programme coordinator for review and approval.
