What should I do if I am sick and unable to attend class?

If you are unwell, let NMIT know as soon as possible and provide supporting documentation if required.

The steps you need to take if you are sick depend on whether you are an international or domestic student.

International students

Immigration New Zealand requires international students to provide evidence of genuine reasons for class absences.

If you are too unwell to attend class:

  1. Make an appointment with a doctor or dentist and request a medical certificate.
  2. If you need urgent support from the NMIT Wellbeing or International Support team, call 0800 422 733.
  3. Email your tutor and international@nmit.ac.nz with:
    • Your student ID number
    • Your full name
    • A brief explanation of why you are unable to attend class
  4. Email a copy of your medical certificate to:

If you need assistance at any stage, contact internationalsupport@nmit.ac.nz.

Domestic students

If you are unwell and unable to attend class:

  1. Contact your tutor or Programme Support Coordinator as soon as possible to let them know you will be absent.
  2. If your absence is extended, or you need to request an extension for an assessment, you may be asked to provide a medical certificate as evidence of your illness.

If you need wellbeing support, contact wellbeing@nmit.ac.nz.

Need help?

If you're unsure who to contact, speak with your tutor or Programme Support Coordinator, who can direct you to the appropriate support services.
