What industry placement opportunities are available?

Bachelor students complete four placements, two in first year and two in second year, so by third year you've worked in industry several times and know what you enjoy. Each placement is 75 hours and happens during the July and September school holidays. In second year, you can choose to complete a placement over summer instead.

You can complete placements with any of the types of organisations listed under career options, including hatcheries, farms, research organisations, councils and MPI (the hardest to get into, though we've placed a few students there). You can do placements anywhere in the top of the South, elsewhere in New Zealand or overseas. Past students have travelled to Australia, and one went to Namibia to work on seaweed.

We do the legwork. You tell us where you'd like to go or what you're interested in, and we put options in front of you and make the arrangements. We can place students in around 98% of cases. Occasionally a business is too quiet or understaffed at the time, in which case we look for a different time.

Past placements include a kingfish hatchery in Bream Bay, salmon farming in Tasmania and research placements at Cawthron in Nelson.
