What identity documents do I need to enrol at NMIT?
To enrol in a programme at NMIT, the New Zealand Government requires us to verify your identity.
We must confirm your:
- Full legal name
- Date of birth
- Gender
- Citizenship or residency status
If you already have a National Student Number (NSN):
If you already have an active National Student Number (NSN), include it when you apply. This may reduce the amount of identity verification required.
If you do not have an NSN, you will need to complete the full identity verification process.
How can I verify my identity?
To verify your identity, you can bring your original documents to be sighted by one of the Enrolments staff at the following NMIT locations:
- Nelson Campus – 322 Hardy Street, Nelson
- Richmond Campus – 390 Lower Queen Street, Richmond
- Marlborough Campus – 85 Budge Street, Blenheim
If you cannot visit a campus, email certified copies of your documents to enrolments@nmit.ac.nz.
A certified copy is a photocopy, scanned copy or clear photograph of an original document that has been endorsed as a true copy of the original.
Certification must be completed by:
- the issuing authority, or
- a person authorised under the Oaths and Declarations Act 1957, such as:
- a Justice of the Peace (JP)
- a Court Registrar
- a Deputy Registrar
Acceptable identity documents:
New Zealand Citizens:
Provide one of the following:
- New Zealand birth certificate
- New Zealand passport (an expired passport is acceptable if it has not been cancelled)
- New Zealand certificate of citizenship
- If you cannot obtain a birth certificate, a statement of whakapapa that includes your date of birth and is countersigned by a Kaumātua
New Zealand Residents:
Provide one of the following:
- Passport with a current New Zealand resident or permanent resident visa (visa label),
- Passport together with an Immigration New Zealand letter or email confirming your current resident visa (for label-less visas)
- Certificate of Identity issued by Immigration New Zealand (for refugees)
Australian citizens or Australian permanent residents living in New Zealand:
Provide one of the following:
- Australian birth certificate issued before 20 August 1986
- Australian passport
- Passport with a current Australian Resident Return Visa
International applicants must provide an original or certified copy of their passport and visa.
