What evidence of creative work do I need to provide with my application?

Our Arts and Media programmes require you to submit evidence of your creative work as part of your application.

This helps us understand your creative interests, skills and potential for success in the programme.

Evidence of creative work is required for:

• New Zealand Diploma in Arts and Design (Level 5)
• New Zealand Diploma in Arts and Design (Level 6)
• Bachelor of Arts and Media

You are encouraged to include work you have already created. This might include:

• Artwork completed at school
• Projects submitted for assessment
• Drawings or sketches
• Photography
• Sewing or textile work
• Model making
• Collage
• Other creative hobbies or personal projects

Photos of your work are acceptable and are often preferred for large or three-dimensional pieces.

Yes. You are still encouraged to apply.

If you don't already have examples of creative work, create something specifically for your application. Here are a few ideas:

• Tell a story with photographs: Use your phone or a camera to take three to five photographs that tell a story. You could present them on a single A4 page or display them in another creative way.

• Create some sketches: Draw from observation or imagination using any materials you have available. Try creating three to five sketches, then choose one to develop further.

• Make something from nothing: Gather up some bits of recycling-plastic, paper, cardboard-and have a go at making something. E.g. create a new purpose for something discarded, create a miniature model of a fictional character (think up a creative name for your character). Think BIG or tiny - stretch your imagination.

The goal is to demonstrate your creativity and imagination.

You do not need to submit everything you have created. Just pick a few of your favourite pieces of work.

Photos of original work are acceptable. For example, if you like making models, two or three photos of a model from different angles is great! A photo of a large painting is better than the original work.

Try to include a couple of different things. For example, if you did graphic design at school, include some examples of that! Also try to find another medium, for example, some sketches of your design process, or some photos of something else you have made.

For your application to NMIT, three different examples from the lists above is great.

You may also include something that shows a particular skill e.g. sewing, model making, carving, jewellery.

If you include work based on someone else's design or tutorial, make sure you acknowledge this. Most of your submission should demonstrate your own ideas, creativity and design process.
