What criminal convictions do I need to declare?

NMIT is committed to providing a safe learning and working environment for all learners, staff, and the wider community.

As part of your application, you are required to declare any criminal convictions that are not covered by the Criminal Records (Clean Slate) Act 2004.

Do I need to declare convictions covered by the Clean Slate scheme?

Some convictions do not need to be disclosed if they are covered by the Criminal Records (Clean Slate) Act 2004.

Why does NMIT ask for this information?

By making a criminal conviction declaration, you consent to NMIT carrying out a criminal history check with New Zealand Police, where required.

Any disclosed convictions are assessed on an individual basis. NMIT considers factors such as:

  • The nature of the offence.
  • How long ago the offence occurred.
  • The severity of any penalty imposed.
  • Any relevance to your chosen programme of study.
What happens if I declare a conviction?

If you disclose a criminal conviction, you may be asked to discuss it with the relevant Curriculum Manager.

The purpose of this discussion is to understand your circumstances, provide support where appropriate, and assess suitable pathways into study. NMIT is committed to supporting the rehabilitation of learners wherever possible.
