How does the phone system in New Zealand work?
If you are studying in New Zealand, you can use either a mobile phone or a landline to stay connected. This article explains the main phone providers, how to use an overseas phone, and other calling options.

The international calling code for New Zealand is +64.
Using a mobile phone:
New Zealand mobile numbers usually begin with 021, 022, or 027.
Mobile coverage is generally good in towns and cities but can be limited in remote or rural areas, including some wilderness areas. Remember to make use of the free Wi-Fi available on campus whenever possible.

Using your overseas phone:
If your phone is unlocked and compatible with New Zealand networks, you can usually continue using it by installing either:
- a New Zealand physical SIM card, or
- an eSIM (if your phone supports eSIM).
SIM cards and eSIMs are available from most mobile providers and can be purchased online, at airports, supermarkets, electronics retailers, or provider stores. Prepaid plans are popular with international students because they don't require a long-term contract.
You can top up your prepaid account using your provider's app, website, or at many supermarkets and convenience stores.
Landline phones:
Most students do not need a landline phone, as mobile phones are the primary way people communicate in New Zealand. If you need a home phone or broadband connection, providers such as Spark, One NZ, 2degrees, Orcon and Slingshot offer home services.
Freephone numbers:
Phone numbers beginning with 0800 or 0508 are generally free to call from anywhere in New Zealand.
