Students who complete STCW training are required to complete refresher training for some certificates every five years. The expiry date for each certificate is printed on the certificate itself.
Basic Training refresher requirements:
If you have completed the Basic Training programme, you must complete refresher training for the following courses within five years of the certificate issue date:
- STCW Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting
- STCW Personal Survival Techniques
The following Basic Training courses do not require refresher training:
- STCW Elementary First Aid
- STCW Personal Safety and Social Responsibility (PSSR)
- STCW Seafarers Security Awareness
Advanced Training refresher requirements:
If you have completed Advanced Training, you must complete refresher training for the following courses within five years of the certificate issue date:
- STCW Proficiency in Survival Craft
- STCW Advanced Fire Fighting
The following Advanced Training course does not require refresher training:
- STCW Medical First Aid

Do I need to provide any documentation before enrolling in refresher training?
Yes. Before you begin your refresher training, NMIT requires:
- Copies of your original STCW certificates
- A Drills and Sea Service Letter from your employer confirming you have participated in ongoing drills and training at sea

If I complete the Advanced Training refresher, will I also receive the Basic Training refresher certificates?
Yes. When you successfully complete the Advanced Training refresher, you will receive all four applicable refresher certificates.
