How do I register for password recovery options?

Set up your mobile number or personal email address so you can reset your NMIT password without contacting the IT Helpdesk.

NMIT provides a self-service password reset service that allows students and staff to reset their NMIT computer account and Microsoft 365 password without contacting the IT Helpdesk.

Before you can use this service, you must register at least one password recovery method.

Register your password recovery options:
  1. Open the NMIT Self-Service Password Reset registration page.
  2. Sign in using:
    • Your NMIT student email address (for example, preferredname-lastname@live.nmit.ac.nz)
    • Your current NMIT password
  3. Configure at least one of the following recovery methods:

Option 1: Mobile phone (recommended)

  1. Select Mobile phone.
  2. Enter your mobile phone number.
  3. Choose to receive a verification code by text message.
  4. Enter the verification code when prompted.

Option 2: Personal email address

  1. Select Email.
  2. Enter your personal (non-NMIT) email address.
  3. Enter the verification code sent to your email address.
  4. When your recovery method has been successfully verified, a green tick will appear next to it.
  5. Select Finish to complete the registration.

Important:
If you forget your password before registering a recovery method, you will not be able to reset it yourself.
