How do I open a bank account in New Zealand?

If you are an international student, it is recommended that you set up a New Zealand bank account before you arrive in New Zealand.
Under New Zealand law, people who hold student or visitor visas valid for less than six months are generally not able to open a bank account after arriving in New Zealand.
Once you arrive, you will need to make an appointment with your chosen bank to complete the account opening process.
What documents will I need?
You should be prepared to provide:
- Your passport
- Your New Zealand visa (including work rights, if applicable)
- Proof of your New Zealand address (a tenancy agreement is preferred)
- Your NMIT student ID card
- Your overseas Tax Identification Number (TIN), if you have one

Most banks are open: Monday to Friday: 9:00 am to 4:30 pm
Automatic Teller Machines (ATMs) are available 24 hours a day.
