How do I get a Certificate, Ticket or Licence from Maritime New Zealand?

To work at sea in New Zealand waters, you must hold the appropriate Certificate, Ticket or Licence issued by Maritime New Zealand (MNZ).

Applications for Certificates, Tickets and Licences must be made directly to Maritime New Zealand.

How do I apply?

As part of your application to Maritime New Zealand, you may need to provide documents such as:

  • A completed application form
  • Evidence of sea service (sea time)
  • A valid medical certificate
  • An approved qualification
  • Any other documentation required for the certificate, ticket or licence you are applying for

Refer to Maritime New Zealand's requirements for the specific Certificate, Ticket or Licence you wish to obtain.

What is NMIT's role?

NMIT/IMINZ delivers approved maritime training and qualifications that meet the training requirements for many Maritime New Zealand Certificates, Tickets and Licences.

Important: Completing an NMIT or IMINZ qualification does not automatically result in a Maritime New Zealand Certificate, Ticket or Licence. Your qualification forms part of your application, which must be submitted to and approved by Maritime New Zealand.
