How do I create a strong password for my NMIT account?

A strong password helps protect your NMIT account and your personal information.
Your NMIT username:Your username is usually based on your name:
- Students: PreferredForename-Surname
- If the username is already in use, an additional number may be added.
- Very long names may be shortened.
If your student ID is five digits long, add a zero (0) to the end of your student ID to create your default password.
Note: You should change your default password as soon as possible after signing in.
Password requirements:Your password must
- Be at least 8 characters long.
- Include at least one uppercase letter.
- Include at least one lowercase letter.
- Include at least one number.
- Not contain three consecutive characters from your username.
- Not contain any spaces.
Examples of passwords that meet these requirements include:
- Just123SD
- 123456Ar
- MyTime46
Choose a password that is
- Easy for you to remember.
- Difficult for others to guess.
- Based on a memorable phrase rather than a single word.
Avoid using personal information such as your name, date of birth, or common words.
Password management:- Your password does not expire, but you will receive reminder emails advising when you last changed it.
- You can change your password at any time, whether you are on or off campus.
- Register your password recovery options so you can reset your password yourself if you forget it.
You are responsible for all activity carried out using your NMIT account.
- Never share your username or password with anyone.
- Keep your login details secure.
- Change your password immediately if you think someone else may know it.
