Can I drive in New Zealand using my overseas driver's licence?

Learn how long you can drive on an overseas licence in New Zealand and when you need to convert it to a New Zealand driver licence.

If you have a valid overseas driver's licence or driving permit, you may be able to drive in New Zealand, provided you meet the requirements set by the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA).

Driving with an overseas licence

You can drive using your overseas driver's licence for up to 12 months from the date you arrive in New Zealand.

To be eligible, you must meet the conditions and requirements set by NZTA.

Converting to a New Zealand driver licence

If you will be in New Zealand for more than 12 months, you must obtain a New Zealand driver licence to continue driving legally.

You may be able to convert your overseas driver's licence if:

  • Your licence is still current, or
  • It expired less than 12 months ago.

To convert your licence, you must apply through a driver licensing agent.
